Lincoln Town Car Brake Proportioning Valve Parts Questions & Answers

  • Q: What is the purpose of the pressure differential valve?
A: The brake proportioning valve is responsible for sensing any imbalance in hydraulic pressure between the front and rear brake systems. If there is a pressure loss in either system, the valve will cause the brake warning lamp to light up. The lamp will only turn off once the brake system is properly serviced, bled, and the brakes are applied to center the valve. The valve is equipped with a warning switch that is mounted on top of the control valve body. Under normal conditions, the switch remains open as long as the valve piston is centrally located. In vehicles from 1984 onwards, the metering valve is integrated into the brake proportioning valve assembly. This valve limits the pressure to the front brakes until a predetermined front hydraulic pressure is reached. To replace the brake proportioning valve assembly, start by disconnecting the electrical connector from the warning light switch and the hydraulic line fittings from the valve. Plug the ends of the lines to prevent fluid loss. Remove the nuts and bolts securing the valve bracket to the fender apron and take out the assembly. Install the new assembly by positioning it on the fender apron holes and securing it with mounting nuts/bolts. Reconnect all Brake Lines and plug in the electrical connector to the brake warning light switch. Verify the connection by turning the ignition switch to the Start position and checking if the light comes on. Bleed the brake system and centralize the brake proportioning valve. To centralize the valve, turn the ignition switch to the ON position and depress the Brake Pedal several times until the piston centers itself and the warning light goes out. Finally, turn the ignition off and test for firm resistance at the brake pedal.
