Ford F-250 Transmission Assembly Parts Questions & Answers

  • Q: What about transmissions in Ford F-250?
A: Many manually shifted transmissions have been available on F-series and Bronco vehicles over the years. From 1980 through 1987 these include the 3.03 3-speed, the Warner T-18 4-speed, the Warner T-19 4-speed, the New Process 435 4-speed, the single-rail 4-speed overdrive (SROD) and the top mounted shifter 4-speed overdrive (TOD). Transmissions available from 1988 include the Mazda MSOD 5-speed, the S5-42 ZF 5-speed light and heavy duty and the T-18 4-speed. Regardless of year, all transmissions are fully synchronized with all gears, except the reverse sliding gear, which is in constant mesh. The 3 and 4-speed models utilize a bolt-on clutch housing (bell housing) while the 5-speed models incorporate the clutch housing and transmission into a single casting. The 3-speed model is a side shifter with external shift levers and mechanism allowing the use of a steering column shift lever. The remaining transmissions contain the shift mechanisms internally allowing direct-shifting from a simple top mounted shift lever which extends through the floor of the cab. The S5-42 ZF 5-speed is available in two case configurations; concentric slave cylinder design (light duty) or external slave cylinder design (heavy duty). Application of the transmissions depends on the year, engine and model of the vehicle in which it is installed. If you are in doubt as to which transmission is in your particular vehicle, check with your local Ford dealer or automotive transmission facility. Due to the complexity of transmissions and because of the special tools and expertise required to perform an overhaul, it is not advised that it be undertaken by the home mechanic. Therefore, the procedures in are limited to routine adjustments, and removal and installation procedures. Depending upon the expense involved in having a faulty transmission overhauled, ii may be of advantage to consider replacing the unit with either a new or rebuilt one. Your local dealer or transmission specially shop should be able to supply you with information concerning these units as to their cost, availability and exchange policy. Regardless of how you decide to remedy a faulty trans mission problem, however, you can still save considerable expense by removing it and vinstalling it yourself.
  • Q: How to overhaul a manual transmission?
A: Overhauling a manual transmission is complex, involving disassembly, reassembly, and precise measurements. While this can be done by an experienced DIYer with tools like snap-ring pliers, a bearing puller, slide hammer, pin punches, a dial indicator, and possibly a hydraulic press, it's often best left to professionals. If you choose to do it, exploded-view drawings and documentation of disassembly steps are invaluable. Replace parts like gaskets, snap-rings, oil seals, and bearings during reassembly. Keep the work area clean and prelubricate parts before assembly. Test the input shaft and gears for issues before reinstalling the transmission. Lastly, fill it with the appropriate fluid.
  • Q: What are the various automatic transmissions available for the F-250?
A: Various automatic transmissions have been featured in the F-series and Bronco, including the AOC 4-speed, C4, C5, C6 3-speeds, and the E4OD and 4R7OW 4-speeds. The difference lies in torque capacity and shift point mechanisms; the C-series uses a governor and vacuum diaphragm, the AOD uses a governor and throttle valve rod or cable, while the E4OD uses sensors and computer programming. For repairs or overhauls, professional assistance is recommended, or consider replacing the unit. Use high-temperature-resistant seals on these transmissions.
  • Q: How do you remove and install a automatic transmission?
A: To remove the transmission, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal. Then, raise the vehicle on a hoist or with jack stands for better access. Drain the transmission fluid and temporarily install the pan. Remove the torque converter access cover and adapter plate bolts. Take off the driveplate-to-converter attaching nuts, making sure to mark their relationship to the driveplate. Rotate the engine to access the converter drain plug and remove it. On 2WD models, remove the driveshaft and cover the transmission end. On 4WD models, remove the Transfer Case. Detach the speedometer cable on pre-1992 2WD models. Remove the manual shift linkage, TV control rod or cable, kickdown rod or cable, and vacuum modulator hose if equipped. Disconnect the neutral safety switch electrical connector, manual lever position sensor electrical connector (E4OD only), and solenoid body electrical connector (E4OD only). Remove the transmission fluid filler tube and dipstick. Take out the starter and disconnect the oil cooler lines. Position a transmission jack and remove the rear mount and insulators. Remove any gussets and the crossmember. Disconnect the inlet pipe flange(s) from the exhaust manifold(s). Support the rear of the engine and remove the transmission housing-to-engine bolts. Carefully move the transmission to the rear, down, and away from the vehicle, ensuring the converter stays with it. To install the transmission, follow the reverse of the removal procedure. Push in and turn the converter to engage it with the front pump. Rotate the converter to align the bolt drive lugs and drain plug with the driveplate holes. Avoid a "nose-down" attitude to prevent disengagement of the converter from the pump gear. If the torque converter is bolted to the driveplate, position it with one bolt hole at the six o'clock position and install all bolts before tightening. Adjust the kickdown rod/cable, TV rod/cable, and manual selector linkage as needed. Lower the vehicle and add fluid to the Max mark on the dipstick with the engine off. Start the engine, check the fluid level, and top up if necessary.
  • Q: What is the E4OD transmission and how does it operate?
A: The E4OD transmission is a fully automatic, electronically controlled, four-speed unit with a locking torque converter. Transmission gear selection and converter clutch operation in the Overdrive range is controlled by the Electronic Engine Control system. Operating conditions are relayed to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) by various sensors throughout the vehicle and transmission. The computer compares these conditions with stored parameters and logically determines the state in which the transmission should operate. The computer sends the appropriate commands to the internal solenoid body. Five solenoids within the assembly actuate the hydraulic circuits which control gear selection, gear change harshness (control pressure), and torque converter lock-up or coast operation.
  • Q: How to remove and reinstall a manual transmission?
A: Disconnect the battery negative cable. Drain the transmission lubricant into a suitable container. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the shift lever on vehicles equipped with direct-shifting transmissions. Detach the shift linkage at the transmission on vehicles equipped with a column shift. Disconnect the electrical connector from the back-up light switch. Remove the speedometer cable and gear assembly on 1991 and earlier 2WD models. Disconnect the clutch hydraulic line from the slave cylinder on vehicles with a concentric slave cylinder. Remove the external slave cylinder from the transmission housing on 5-speed models equipped with a 7.5L engine. Disconnect the driveshaft on 2WD models. Remove the Transfer Case shift lever assembly and transfer case on 4WD vehicles. Remove the starter motor from the transmission on 5-speed models. Support the transmission with a transmission jack. Remove the transmission rear mount. Remove the gussets if installed. Remove any harness ties on the crossmember and remove the crossmember. Remove the transmission retaining bolts from the rear of the clutch housing on 3 and 4-speed transmissions. Remove the transmission case-to-engine block retaining bolts on 5-speed models. Slowly withdraw the transmission straight back to disengage the input shaft from the clutch disc. Lower the transmission and remove it from beneath the vehicle. Check all clutch related components and replace worn parts as required. Prepare the release bearing for reinstallation. Install the clutch housing if removed. Secure the transmission to the transmission jack and raise it up. Verify that the dowel pins are installed in the engine block. Wiggle the transmission forwards, inserting the input shaft through the release bearing hub and into the clutch disc splines until the transmission mates with the clutch housing. Wiggle the transmission forwards, inserting the input shaft into the clutch disc splines until the transmission mates with the engine block. Install the retaining bolts and tighten them to the torque. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal. After connecting the line to the concentric slave cylinder, bleed the clutch hydraulic system.
