About Lincoln Mark VIII

Lincoln Mark VIII continued the role of the Mark II as a luxury-oriented grand touring coupe. Still featured a unibody construction with a high-strength roof capable of withstanding 5000 lbs of force, heavy-gauge steel door beams to protect against side impacts, front and rear crumple zones, dual front-side airbags and four-wheel antilock disc brakes, Mark VIII also got a short-long arm (SLA) four-wheel independent suspension with front and rear stabilizer bars and a standard computer-controlled air suspension. It was offered in LSC (Luxury Sport Coupe) model and a Diamond Anniversary package. Mark VIII was powered by a 4.6 L V8 that could produce 280 hp and 285 pound-feet of torque and 4.6 L V8 making 290 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Both engines were mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission.

Lincoln Mark VIII Common Problems & Maintenance Tips

Though Lincoln Mark VIII received a facelift in 1997 and had Spring Feature and the Collector's Edition models, it could not withstand the natural beat though. In the end, these common problems will find the Mark III:
First, engine failure. According to some Lincoln Mark VIII drivers with years of driving experience, this is the most common problem that they have met during driving. As engine failure is often regarded as the omen of vehicle breakdown, thus, you had better learn about how to diagnose and solve it as soon as possible. Some Mark VIII drivers told this issue often manifests as strange sounds from the engine, engine runs roughly, misfires, stalls or suffers from starting, and all these symptoms could get worse caused by the cooling system failure, which makes the engine keep at a high operation temperature so that its performance reduces dramatically so that it may lose power while acceleration and activate the Check Engine Light. Under such circumstance, you are advised to inspect the Mark VIII spark plug, air filter, oil filter, crankshaft pulley, thermostat gasket and radiator hose thoroughly.
Second, suspension and transmission failures. Both issues are very common on any ordinary vehicles, without exception for Lincoln Mark VIII. And they could lead to uncomfortable and unsteady driving experience, even both of them could cause clunking or rattling noises from underneath the vehicle. The difference lies on the suspension failure would also make the vehicle tilt to one side due to uneven tire wear, and it could cause poor handling due to bouncing while driving and loose steering wheel; while the transmission failure often shows as indicator not matching the gear, the vehicle not turning off, starting in another gear, or not going into gear at all, transmission slippage, delay in reversing and so on. And the Mark VIII coil springs, shift cable, transmission pan and automatic transmission filter could be the culprits.
Apart from mentioned issues, in your Lincoln Mark VIII, you should maintain the Mark VIII door handle, emblem, window switch, wiper arm, fog light bulb, headlight bulb and oil pressure switch to make sure a safe and comfortable driving experience.
