Q: How to remove and install a power steering pump on Mercury Grand Marquis?
A: On 5.0L engines, relieve tension on the accessory drivebelt used to drive the power steering pump pulley; on 4.6L engines, relieve tension on the serpentine belt. On 5.0L engines, the pump can be accessed from above. On 4.6L engines, raise the front of the vehicle and place it securely on jackstands as the pump is more easily accessed from underneath the vehicle on these models. Locate the pump on the left (driver's) side of the engine block. Disconnect the fluid return hose from the pump and drain the fluid from the pump reservoir. Disconnect the pressure hose from the pump but do not unscrew the pressure fitting itself. Plug the lines to prevent contamination. Models from 1997 on have an electrical connector for the variable assist steering. Disconnect this electrical connector before removing the pump. On 5.0L engines, the pump is mounted on a bracket bolted to the engine. You'll have to remove the pulley before you can remove the pump-to-bracket mounting bolts. A special puller for this purpose is available at most auto parts stores. On 4.6L engines, the pump is mounted directly on the block, so the pulley doesn't cover up the mounting bolts. On these models, it's easier to remove the pulley on the bench after you've removed the pump assembly. Remove the pump mounting bolts and remove the pump. Installation is the reverse of the above procedure. On 5.0L engines, you'll need a special pulley installer tool to install the pulley once the pump is bolted to its mounting bracket. Install the accessory drivebelt or the serpentine belt. Install the pressure and return lines and fill the reservoir with an approved fluid. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to distribute the fluid, then recheck the fluid level and top-off if necessary. Bleed the power steering system.
