Ford Bronco II Vapor Canister Parts Questions & Answers

  • Q: What is the purpose of the Ford Bronco II fuel evaporative emission control system and Vapor Canister?
A: All gasoline powered vehicles are equipped with fuel evaporative emission control, designed to limit fuel vapors released into the atmosphere. Changes in atmospheric temperature cause fuel tanks to breathe, with the air within the tank expanding and condensing with outside temperature changes. The Evaporative Emission Control System provides a sealed fuel system with the capability to store and condense fuel vapors. The system has three parts: a fill control vent system; a vapor vent and storage system; and a pressure and vacuum relief system. The fill control vent system is a modification to the fuel tank, using an air space within the tank which is 10-12% of the tank's volume. The in-tank vent system consists of the air space and a vapor separator assembly. The sealed filler cap has a pressure vacuum relief valve. Because the filler cap is sealed, fuel vapors have but one place through which they may escape-the vapor separator assembly at the top of the fuel tank. The vapors pass through the foam material and continue through a single vapor line which leads to a canister in the engine compartment. The canister is filled with activated charcoal. As the fuel vapors enter the charcoal canister, they are absorbed by the charcoal. When the engine is started, vacuum causes fresh air to be drawn into the canister from its open bottom. The fresh air passes through the charcoal picking up the hydrocarbons which are trapped there and feeding them into the intake for burning with the fuel mixture. The only testing done to the vapor canister is a visual inspection. The CANP solenoid is removed and tested using an external voltage source. The fuel vapor canister is disconnected from the vapor hoses and removed from the vehicle. The fuel vapor valve is removed from the fuel tank and reinstalled. The CANP solenoid is disconnected from the vapor hoses and removed from the vehicle. The fuel filler cap is unscrewed and removed from the vehicle.
