When troubleshooting the Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor, it's essential to eliminate wiring issues before attributing driveability problems to the sensor. Installed in the air intake duct, the MAF sensor utilizes a hot-wire sensing element to measure air molecular mass, converting temperature changes into an analog voltage signal for the PCM to calculate the necessary fuel injector pulse width. A malfunctioning MAF sensor can lead to issues like surging or stalling. To assess the MAF sensor, check for power by disconnecting the electrical connector and measuring voltage between the B+ and ground terminals, ensuring a reading of more than 10 volts with the ignition On. Reconnect the connector and backprobe the signal and ground terminals, confirming a voltage of 0.5 to 0.7 volts at idle and an increase to 1.5 to 3.0 volts with increased engine rpm. If suspicion of a defective MAF persists, an ohmmeter can be used to probe the signal and ground terminals for an open circuit. If voltage readings are correct, further investigate the wiring harness using wiring diagrams. Replacement involves disconnecting the electrical connector, removing the air intake duct, and replacing the MAF sensor assembly, emphasizing not to separate the plastic MAF sensor body from the metal air duct.
