Mercury 5L8Z-9A758-AA Throttle Control Cable Assembly

This procedure is only applicable to 2008 and earlier models. For later models, an electronic throttle body controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) with input from the Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) sensor is used. To begin, disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. On V6 models, remove the engine cover. On four cylinder models, detach the accelerator cable from the air intake duct, and on V6 models, detach the accelerator cable bracket from the intake manifold. Disengage the accelerator cable from the cable bracket by rotating the cable housing 90 degrees and pulling it out of the bracket's slot. Disconnect the accelerator cable from the throttle body by sliding the end plug out of its slot in the throttle lever cam. Inside the passenger compartment, disengage the lower end of the accelerator cable from the accelerator pedal by pulling firmly on the plug at the end of the cable and sliding it out of the slot. Return to the engine compartment and pull the cable through the firewall until the lower end plug reaches the grommet, then remove the grommet and pull the cable through the hole. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Verify that the throttle valve moves smoothly and easily from fully closed to fully open and back again while an assistant depresses and releases the accelerator pedal. After reconnecting the battery, the PCM must relearn its idle and fuel trim strategy for optimal driveability and performance.
