Q:
How to replace the CKP sensor? Posted by Customer
A:
Replacing the CKP sensor might set a Diagnostic Trouble Code (OTC). If it does, and you have a generic scan tool that can clear codes, erase the code and see if it reappears. If it does, drive the vehicle to a dealer service department or other properly equipped repair shop to perform a Misfire Monitor Neutral Profile Correction procedure with a factory scan tool. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Loosen the right front wheel lug nuts, raise the front of the vehicle and place it securely on jackstands. On all models except 1.5L, 1.6L and 3.5L V6 models, remove the right front wheel, then remove the smaller access panel below the larger fender splash shield. On 3.5L V6 models, remove the engine undercover. For the 1.5L and 1.6L engines, remove the under vehicle splash shield, disconnect the electrical connector from the crankshaft position sensor (CKP), remove the CKP mounting bolt and lift the sensor up until the locating dowel on the sensor base is free.On 2.0L, 2.3L and 2.5L engines, put the No. 1 cylinder at Top Dead Center (TDC), disconnect the electrical connector from the CKP sensor, unscrew the CKP sensor mounting bolts and remove the sensor. For installation, slide the sensor under the crankshaft pulley, then push the locating dowel on the sensor base into the cover and install the mounting bolt. For 2.3L and 2.5L models, install a 6 mm x 18 mm (0.23 x 0.7 inch) bolt in the threaded hole provided in the crankshaft pulley and screw it into the timing chain cover. Install the CKP sensor but don't tighten the sensor mounting bolts. Align the sensor with the special alignment jig included with the new sensor in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. For 3.0L engine models, loosen the right front wheel lug nuts, then raise the front of the vehicle and place it securely on jackstands. Remove the right front wheel. Remove the smaller access panel below the larger fender splash shield, disconnect the electrical connector from the CKP sensor, unscrew the CKP sensor mounting bolt and remove the CKP sensor, remove and inspect the sensor O-ring.The 3.5L engine model requires removing the upstream and downstream oxygen sensors from the catalytic converter for the front cylinder head, then removing the catalyst for the front cylinder head. Also remove the CKP sensor heat shield mounting bolt and nut and the heat shield. Remove the rubber grommet cover, disconnect the CKP sensor electrical connector, remove the CKP sensor mounting bolt and remove the sensor. For 2.7L V6 engine models, remove the engine cover, the rear air intake duct and the rear Charge Air Cooler duct, disconnect the electrical connector from the CKP sensor, remove the CKP sensor mounting bolt and remove the sensor. For all models, always lubricate the sensor O-ring with clean engine oil before installation, and the installation is otherwise the reverse of removal.
