Remove all burrs from the crankshaft oil holes with a stone, file or scraper, ensuring the oil holes are chamfered to prevent damage to new bearings. Clean the crankshaft with solvent and dry it with compressed air, using a stiff brush to clean the oil holes and flush them with solvent. Rub a penny across each journal to reveal its condition - if copper rubs off and is embedded in the crankshaft, the journals should be reground. Check the main and connecting rod bearing journals for uneven wear, scoring, pits and cracks, and inspect the rest of the crankshaft for cracks and other damage. It should be magnafluxed to reveal hidden cracks. Measure the diameter of the main and connecting rod journals with a micrometer and compare the results to detect taper and out-of-round conditions. If the crankshaft journals are damaged or worn beyond the limits, have the crankshaft reground by an automotive machine shop and use the correct size bearing inserts. Check the oil seal journals at each end of the crankshaft for wear and damage. If the seal has worn a groove in the journal, or if it's nicked or scratched, the new seal may leak when the engine is reassembled. In some cases, an automotive machine shop may be able to repair the journal by pressing on a thin sleeve. If repair isn't feasible, a new or different crankshaft should be installed. Finally, examine the main and rod bearing inserts.

After verifying the main bearing oil clearance, a thin, uniform layer of moly-base grease or engine assembly lube is applied to the bearing surfaces of the crankshaft.

Before initiating the crankshaft removal process, verify the endplay by setting up a dial indicator aligned with the crankshaft's end and push it fully to the rear, zeroing the dial indicator. Then, gently pry the crankshaft to the front and note the reading as the endplay. If it exceeds the limit, inspect the crankshaft thrust surfaces for wear; if wear is absent, new main bearings should resolve the endplay issue. Alternatively, feeler gauges can be used for this purpose. Ensure the main bearing caps are consecutively numbered, usually from the front to the rear, and mark them if they lack identification. In OHV engines, loosen the main bearing cap bolts incrementally, starting from the center and moving outward, while noting the use of stud bolts that should be returned to their original positions during reinstallation. For OHC engines, which have a more complex removal and assembly procedure due to multiple bolts and thrust bearing caps, follow a precise procedure. Remove all side bolts, bottom the jack screws against the main bearing caps, and then remove the main bearing cap bolts, ensuring their replacement due to their nature as non-reusable "angle-torque" bolts. Gently tap and separate the caps from the engine block, avoiding dropping any bearing inserts. Carefully lift the crankshaft from the engine with assistance if needed, and return the caps, with bearing inserts in place, to their respective positions on the engine block, tightening the bolts finger-tight.
