Depress the brake pedal several times with the engine off to check for any change in the pedal reserve distance. Start the engine and depress the pedal to ensure it goes down slightly, indicating normal operation. To check for airtightness, start the engine and turn it off after one or two minutes. Slowly depress the brake pedal several times, noting if it goes down farther the first time but gradually rises after the second or third depression. Additionally, depress the brake pedal while the engine is running and stop the engine with the pedal depressed. If there is no change in the pedal reserve travel after holding the pedal for 30 seconds, the booster is airtight. For removal and installation, it is recommended to use special tools and have a new or factory rebuilt unit installed if a problem arises. To remove the power unit, remove the nuts attaching the master cylinder to the booster and carefully pull the master cylinder forward without bending or kinking the brake lines. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the fitting on the power brake booster. If applicable, rotate the speed control deactivation switch counterclockwise to remove it and disconnect the pushrod from the upper end of the brake pedal. Remove the nuts attaching the booster to the firewall and lift the booster unit away from the firewall and out of the engine compartment. To install the booster, place it into position and tighten the retaining nuts. Connect the pushrod to the brake pedal and install the retaining clip and cover. Finally, install the master cylinder and reconnect the vacuum hose. Test the operation of the brakes before placing the vehicle in normal service.
