The minimum idle speed of the engine is pre-set at the factory and cannot be adjusted under normal circumstances. If there are issues with the idle, such as fluctuations, stalling, high idling, or uncontrollable speeds, it is important to check if the Idle Control Valve (ICV) is damaged. The ICV controls the amount of air that bypasses the throttle valve and regulates the engine idle speed. It is controlled by voltage pulses from the PCM (computer) and is located on the throttle body. To determine if the ICV is damaged, several checks can be performed. First, check for the voltage signal from the PCM by probing the wires of the ICV electrical connector with a voltmeter. The voltage should be around 10.5 to 12.5 volts. If the voltage is correct, measure the resistance across the terminals of the ICV, which should be between 6.0 to 13.0 ohms. Additionally, check for any internal short circuits by measuring the resistance from either terminal to the ICV body, which should be 10,000 ohms or greater. If any of these checks indicate a problem, the ICV should be replaced. To remove the valve, unplug the electrical connector and remove the two attaching screws. Check the condition of the O-ring and replace if necessary. Clean the sealing surface and bore of the throttle body assembly before installing the new O-ring and securing the ICV with the screws. Finally, plug in the electrical connector at the ICV assembly. It is important to note that the idle speed is not adjustable and requires a special SCAN tool to extract working parameters from the EEC-V system. Therefore, it is recommended to have the procedure performed by a dealer service department or qualified repair shop.
