This system is designed to prevent hydrocarbons from being released into the atmosphere by trapping and storing fuel vapor from the fuel tank. The serviceable parts of the system include a charcoal filled canister, purge control solenoid, connecting lines, fuel tank filler cap, and the fuel injection system. Vapor trapped in the gas tank is vented through a valve in the top of the tank and routed to a charcoal canister located between the right front wheel well and the front bumper, where it's stored until the next engine start. The canister outlet is connected to an electrically actuated canister purge solenoid, which is connected to the intake system. The canister purge solenoid valve is normally closed, but when the engine is started, it opens to draw vapor stored in the canister into the air cleaner housing. The charcoal canister should be checked for any loose, missing, cracked, or broken fittings, as well as any cracks or damage. If the canister is damaged, it should be replaced. The canister purge solenoid valve should also be checked by applying vacuum and battery voltage to ensure it functions properly. If it does not, it should be replaced. To replace the charcoal canister, the single mounting bolt above the canister should be removed, and the canister should be lowered, the hose detached from the purge solenoid valve, and the canister removed. For all other components, the vacuum hose routing schematic on the VECI label should be used to locate the component to be replaced. The hoses and fittings should be labeled, detached, and the component removed. Installation is the reverse of removal.
