The coolant temperature indicator system consists of a temperature gauge mounted in the dash and a coolant temperature sending unit mounted on the engine. The sending unit can be located on the intake manifold for V6 models or at the left front of the intake manifold for VB engines. Some vehicles may have multiple sending units, but only one is used for the indicator system while the others send temperature information to the computer. However, on 2005 and later Expedition/Navigator 5.4L engines, a cylinder head temperature sensor is used instead of a coolant temperature sensor. If an overheating indication occurs, it is important to check the coolant level in the system and ensure that the wiring between the gauge and the sending unit is secure and all fuses are intact. To test the temperature sender, it should read in the cold range when the engine is cold. Disconnect the electrical connector from the sender and attach a jumper wire between the two pins of the connector. With the key ON, the gauge should swing to full hot. If it doesn't, there may be a problem in the circuit from the sender to the instrument panel. If the gauge does swing to full hot during testing but not when the connector is in place and the engine is hot, it is recommended to replace the coolant temperature sending unit. When replacing the sending unit, it is important to prepare the new unit by wrapping its threads with Teflon tape or applying sealer. The pressure cap from the degas bottle should be removed to release any remaining pressure in the system before reinstalling it. For 2005 and later Expedition/Navigator 5.4L engines, the intake manifold must be removed to access the CHT. To replace the sending unit, disconnect the electrical connector and unscrew the sensor from the engine. It is advisable to install the replacement unit quickly to minimize coolant loss. After the replacement unit has been installed, it is recommended to check the coolant level.
