The coolant temperature indicator system includes a warning light or temperature gauge on the dash and a coolant temperature sending unit on the engine. Four-cylinder models and 2009 and later V6 models use a Cylinder Head Temperature (CHT) sensor, while 2008 and earlier V6 models use an Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor. These sensors serve as information sensors for the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and also function as the coolant temperature sending unit. If an overheating indication occurs, check the coolant level and ensure all connectors in the wiring harness between the sending unit and the indicator light or gauge are tight. When the ignition switch is turned to START and the starter motor is turning, the indicator light (if equipped) should come on, indicating a functioning bulb. If the light does not come on, it may be due to a burned-out bulb, faulty ignition switch, or open circuit. Once the engine starts, the indicator light should go out and remain off unless the engine overheats. If the light does not go out, it could be due to a grounded wire between the sending unit and the light, a defective sending unit, or a faulty ignition switch. It is important to check the coolant to ensure it is correctly mixed, as plain water or coolant with a high water content may have too low a boiling point to activate the sending unit.
