Q:
What is the routine preventive maintenance program for the battery in your Lincoln Town Car? Posted by Customer
A:
A routine preventive maintenance program for the battery in your vehicle is the only way to ensure quick and reliable starts. Before performing any battery maintenance, make sure that you have the proper equipment necessary to work safely around the battery. There are also several precautions that should be taken whenever battery maintenance is performed. Before servicing the battery, always turn the engine and all accessories off and disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. The battery produces hydrogen gas, which is both flammable and explosive. Electrolyte contains poisonous and corrosive sulfuric acid. Note the external condition of the battery. If corrosion is evident, the battery should be removed for cleaning. Clean the cable clamps thoroughly with a battery brush or a terminal cleaner and a solution of warm water and baking soda. Make sure that the battery tray is in good condition and the hold-down clamp bolts are tight. Corrosion on the hold-down components, battery case and surrounding areas can be removed with a solution of water and baking soda. Any metal parts of the vehicle damaged by corrosion should be covered with a zincbased primer, then painted. Slow-rate charging is the best way to restore a battery that's discharged to the point where it will not start the engine. It's best to use a one or two-amp battery charger. The average time necessary to charge a battery should be that come with the charger. As a general rule, a trickle charger will charge a battery in 12 to 16 hours.

Q:
How do you disconnect the battery on Lincoln Navigator? Posted by Customer
A:
To disconnect the battery, start by removing both cables from the battery terminals. Use a wrench or battery pliers if necessary, making sure to remove the ground cable first and hook it up last to avoid shorting the battery. Keep in mind that when the battery is disconnected and reconnected, the vehicle may experience abnormal driving symptoms as the computer relearns its adaptive strategy. It may be necessary to drive the vehicle for at least 10 miles to regain smooth operation. Next, remove the bolt and wedge from the battery tray to lift out the battery. Be cautious as it is heavy, and consider using special lifting straps for easier handling. If needed, remove the bolts securing the battery tray for access to other components. To reinstall, simply follow the reverse of the removal process.
