The orifice tube is located in the condenser to evaporator line and is responsible for changing high pressure liquid refrigerant into a low pressure liquid. Before proceeding with any work on the air conditioning system, it is important to have it discharged by a dealer service department or an automotive air conditioning shop. For 2007 and earlier models, the refrigerant line needs to be disconnected from the condenser to the evaporator. This can be done by removing the protective cover from the air conditioning line coupling, using a special spring lock tool to release the coupler, and then using needle-nose pliers to pull out the orifice tube. When installing the new orifice tube, make sure to remove and discard the old O-rings. For 2008 and later models, the expansion valve needs to be removed. This involves removing the nut from the air conditioning refrigerant line fittings at the firewall, pulling the block and lines away from the firewall, and discarding the seals. Then, remove the two bolts from the expansion valve and pull it out, discarding the O-rings. When reinstalling, be sure to replace the seals and O-rings, and then have the system evacuated, recharged, and leak tested by the shop that discharged it.
