If a fuel tank has a build-up of sediment or rust in the bottom, it must be removed and cleaned. When the tank is removed it should be flushed out with hot water and detergent or, preferably, sent to a radiator shop for chemical flushing. Plastic fuel tanks are not repairable - they must be replaced with new ones in the event of damage. On the other hand, the dual-function fuel tank, utilized in early EFI vehicles with dual tanks, performs similar functions as the single fuel tank and incorporates internal valving for mechanical switching of fuel tank supply and return lines. Troubleshooting for the dual-function fuel tank involves similar fuel blockage tests. Additionally, later fuel-injected models feature an in-tank Fuel Delivery Module (FDM) that integrates fuel tank functions, including a venturi jet system, into a single unit. Testing for the FDM fuel tank is not specific, as acceptable performance during fuel pump pressure tests serves as evidence of its operation.

The fuel tanks in these vehicles, constructed of either metal or plastic, are positioned either midship, between the driveline and frame rail, or aft-axle, situated between the frame rails and behind the rear axle. Optional auxiliary tanks, usually located in the alternative midship position, may be present. Plastic tanks, if damaged, are generally non-repairable and should be replaced. For midship tanks on fuel-injected models, fuel system pressure must be relieved before disconnecting the battery and draining fuel. The tank is lowered after removing hoses, filler pipes, and electrical connectors, with the fuel level sending unit/fuel pump and vapor control valve removed if replacing the tank. The process for aft-axle tanks involves draining fuel, disconnecting hoses and electrical connectors, and lowering the tank while supporting it, with additional steps for metal or plastic tanks. Bronco models follow a similar procedure with specific steps for their configuration, including the removal and installation of the vapor emissions control valve for tank replacement. In all cases, proper precautions, such as resetting the inertia switch on fuel-injected models, should be observed during installation.

For the removal and installation of the tank assembly in various Ford models, including Ranger models with center mount fuel tanks, rear fuel tanks (dual tanks), and Bronco II models, follow these general steps. Begin by draining the fuel from the tank and, in some cases, removing the skid plate or support. Disconnect the fuel gauge sending unit wire at the fuel tank, as well as any hoses and lines connected to the tank, including the fuel filler pipe hose and vent hose. If needed, remove the fuel gauge sending unit and gasket. Loosen and remove any mounting straps or brackets securing the tank. Lower the tank carefully from the vehicle. For installation, position the tank to the frame crossmember, reconnect hoses, lines, and wires, ensuring proper connections and using new gaskets and clamps as necessary. Reattach the mounting straps or brackets and tighten the attaching nuts or bolts securely. Reinstall the skid plate or support if removed. Finally, connect the vehicle battery ground cable, fill the tank, and check for any fuel leaks before lowering the vehicle and completing the procedure.
