Q:
How to remove and install the front axle on Ford F-150? Posted by Customer
A:
Loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, then remove the wheel. Remove the dust cap from the hub/Wheel bearing. Remove the Axle Shaft/hub nut from the axle and discard it. Disconnect the vent and vacuum lines from the integrated wheel end, then remove the fasteners securing the integrated wheel end to the steering knuckle. The integrated wheel end is the device bolted to the steering knuckle that couples the Axle Shafts to the wheel hub when 4WD mode is engaged. Separate the upper control arm and tie-rod end from the steering knuckle. Swing the knuckle/hub assembly out (away from the vehicle) until the end of the Axle Shaft is free of the hub. Support the outer end of the Axle Shaft with a piece of wire to avoid unnecessary strain on the inner CV joint. Remove the integrated wheel end from the Axle Shaft outboard end. Mark the relationship of the inner CV joint to the flange, then remove the Axle Shaft flange bolts. Carefully remove the Axle Shaft from the vehicle. Compress the integrated wheel end, then place caps on the vent and vacuum ports to keep it in a compressed state. Install the integrated wheel end on the Axle Shaft outboard end. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal, with the following points: The upper balljoint-to-steering knuckle nut and the tie-rod end nut should not be reused. New ones should always be used. Be sure to tighten them to the torque. Tighten the Axle Shaft flange bolts, integrated wheel end fasteners and the Axle Shaft/hub nut to the torque. Be sure to use a new Axle Shaft/hub nut. Remove the caps from the vent and vacuum ports and connect the vent and vacuum lines to the integrated wheel end. Install the wheel and lug nuts, lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts to the torque.
