Q:
What is the purpose of the Transmission Range (TR) sensor on Ford Explorer Sport Trac? Posted by Customer
A:
The Transmission Range (TR) sensor is mounted on the automatic transmission and senses the position of the gear selector as chosen by the driver. The TR sensor contains a series of resistors and switch contacts. Depending on the gear selector position, the sensor contacts route current through different combinations of resistors and produce voltage signals of different levels. The sensor sends these signals to the PCM, which uses them for a number of engine and transmission control operations. The TR sensor input affects operation of the EGA system, idle speed control, and transaxle torque converter lockup. The sensor also takes the place of the neutral safety switch used on older automatic transmissions. If the gear selector is not in Park or Neutral, the TR sensor will not let the starter motor operate. The Electronic Engine Control (EEC) system can detect sensor problems and set trouble codes to indicate specific faults. For the check and replacement procedures.

Q:
How to replace and adjust DTR sensor on 2000-2011 Ford Ranger with an automatic transmission? Posted by Customer
A:
This procedure is specifically for tater model vehicles with an automatic transmission. It is intended for home mechanics who do not have access to the special DTR sensor alignment tool used by dealership service departments. The procedure begins by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal and placing the shift lever in the NEUTRAL position. The vehicle is then raised and secured on jackstands. The DTR sensor, located at the manual lever on the left side of the transmission, is accessed by peeling back the rubber boot and disconnecting the electrical connector. The shift cable is disconnected from the manual control lever and the manual lever is removed from the manual lever shaft. The relationship of the DTR sensor to the transmission is marked before removing the sensor mounting bolts and removing the sensor from the manual lever shaft. Before installing the DTR sensor, it is important to ensure that the transmission is still in Neutral. The Neutral alignment marks on the DTR sensor are aligned with the corresponding marks on the rotating inner ring and stationary ring. The DTR sensor is then slid onto the manual lever shaft, aligning the ridges on the rotating ring with the keyways on the shaft. It is important to note that the alignment method described may not be sufficiently accurate for a DTR sensor, as its range of movement is small. Once everything is correctly aligned, the DTR sensor mounting bolts are tightened and the alignment of the Neutral marks is rechecked. If necessary, the DTR sensor can be realigned by a dealer. The remainder of the installation is the reverse of the removal process.

Q:
What precautionary step should be taken before starting the alignment procedure, and why is it emphasized for the 2001 Ford Ranger? Posted by Customer
A:
Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. This precaution is emphasized to ensure safety during the alignment process.
