There are two methods. First, inspect the weep or vent holes on the water pump for coolant leakage. Second, listen for a howling sound from the front of the engine while it's running and feel for shaft wear by rocking the water pump pulley up and down.

The water pump, driven by the accessory drive belt, plays a crucial role in preventing engine damage from overheating. If issues arise, replacing the water pump is necessary. For 2001 and later 2.3L engines, disconnect the battery, drain the cooling system, remove the drive belt, and then take out the water pump pulley and bolts. Carefully extract the water pump and lubricate the O-ring seal on the replacement. Installation follows the reverse process. For all other models, disconnect the battery, drain the cooling system, and remove the cooling fan and shroud. Loosen clamps, detach hoses, and remove the drive belt and pulley. On four-cylinder SOHC engines, remove the outer timing belt cover. For 2010 and earlier V6 engines, consider removing the alternator and its mounting bracket if needed. Unbolt and detach the water pump, clean surfaces, apply RTV sealant, and carefully install the new pump and gasket. Tighten bolts evenly to the specified torque, reinstall removed parts, refill the cooling system, and check drive belt tension. Run the engine and inspect for leaks.
