For the removal of the water pump, early carbureted models should first drain the cooling system and, if applicable, remove the air cleaner assembly, air intake duct, fan or fan clutch assembly, and related components such as the drive belt, water pump pulley, power steering pump, air conditioning compressor, air pump pulley hub, alternator, and associated brackets. For fuel-injected models, the process involves draining the cooling system, removing the fan or fan clutch assembly, releasing the accessory drive belt, and detaching brackets and accessories to access water pump attaching bolts. Disconnecting hoses, removing retaining bolts, and extracting the water pump allow for its replacement, along with gasket removal and surface cleaning. During installation, applying RTV sealant to new gaskets, careful positioning, and tightening of retaining bolts are crucial. Reconnecting hoses and components, installing accessory drive belts, filling the cooling system, and checking for leaks complete the procedure.

To identify any signs of leakage, especially around the front pump seal at the outlet of the drive-shaft and at the drain hole.
