A malfunctioning water pump can lead to severe engine damage from overheating. To assess the water pump's operation, there are three methods: first, with the engine running at normal temperature, squeeze the upper radiator hose, and if the water pump is functioning correctly, a pressure surge should be felt upon release. Second, check for coolant leakage from the weep or vent holes on the water pump, indicating a pump seal failure. Lastly, listen for a howling sound at the engine's front, and feel for shaft wear by rocking the water pump pulley. If issues are identified, replace the water pump using the following steps: disconnect the negative battery cable, drain the cooling system, and remove the cooling fan, shroud, drive belt, and pulley. Set the number one cylinder at top dead center, remove the engine timing belt cover, and proceed to remove the timing belt, tensioner assembly, camshaft sprocket, and timing belt rear stud. Loosen clamps and detach hoses from the water pump, then remove the water pump bolts, ensuring correct installation by noting their locations. Clean threads and holes, compare the new pump to the old one, remove old gasket material, and clean mating surfaces. Apply a thin coat of RTV sealant to both sides of the new gasket, install it on the water pump, and attach the pump and gasket to the engine. Thread and tighten the bolts, ensuring the pump rotates freely. Reconnect the heater return tube and water inlet pipe, install the timing cover stud, and reinstall the camshaft sprocket, timing belt, and all previously removed parts. Refill the cooling system, start the engine, allow it to reach normal temperature, and check for leaks.
