Q:
How to check and replace Clutch Disc,Pressure Plate,Release Bearing on Ford Explorer Sport Trac? Posted by Customer
A:
To access the clutch components, typically, the transmission (and transfer case on 4WD models) is removed, while the engine remains in the vehicle. If the engine is being removed for a major overhaul, the clutch should be checked for wear, and worn components should be replaced. However, due to the relatively low cost of clutch components compared to the effort required to access them, it is recommended to replace them whenever the engine or transmission is removed, unless they are new or in near-perfect condition. The following procedures assume the engine will stay in place. First, the transmission is removed, and the engine is supported, preferably using an engine hoist or a jack with a wood block beneath the engine. To support the clutch disc during removal, a clutch alignment tool is installed through the clutch disc hub. The flywheel and pressure plate are carefully inspected for indexing marks, and if not found, marks are scribed for proper alignment during installation. The pressure plate-to-flywheel bolts are then loosened in a criss-cross pattern, and the pressure plate, along with the clutch disc, is removed. Inspection involves checking the flywheel for defects, inspecting the pilot bearing, examining the clutch disc lining for wear and damage, and checking the pressure plate for issues like score marks or cracks. The release bearing is also inspected and replaced along with the clutch disc. Before installation, the flywheel and pressure plate machined surfaces are cleaned with lacquer thinner or acetone to ensure no oil or grease is present. The clutch disc and pressure plate are positioned against the flywheel, aligned with an alignment tool, and tightened in a criss-cross pattern. The clutch disc is centered using the alignment tool, and the pressure plate-to-flywheel bolts are gradually tightened. Finally, the clutch release bearing is installed, followed by the reinstallation of the transmission and all previously removed components, ensuring all fasteners are tightened.
