Q:
How to prepare for piston/connecting rod assembly removal on Lincoln Continental? Posted by Customer
A:
To prepare for piston/connecting rod assembly removal, check for ridges at the upper limit of ring travel using your fingernail and, if present, use a ridge reamer to eliminate them before attempting to remove the piston/connecting rod assemblies. Ensure the tool doesn't cut into the ring travel area more than 1/32-inch. Once ridges are addressed, turn the engine upside-down with the crankshaft facing up. Before removing connecting rods, check the side clearance with a dial indicator or feeler gauges, ensuring it falls within the specified limits; excessive clearance may require new connecting rods or crankshaft repair. Mark connecting rods and caps for identification, then gradually loosen the connecting rod cap nuts or bolts and remove them by hand. Remove the connecting rod cap and bearing insert, protecting the crankshaft with hose sections if studs are present. Push the connecting rod/piston assembly out through the top of the engine using a wooden or plastic hammer handle, ensuring any resistance is double-checked for ridge removal. Repeat for remaining cylinders. After removal, reassemble connecting rod caps and bearing inserts in their respective rods, securing cap nuts finger tight, and avoid separating pistons from connecting rods.

Q:
How to install piston/connecting rod assemblies on Lincoln Continental? Posted by Customer
A:
Before installing the piston/connecting rod assemblies, ensure the cylinder walls are meticulously clean, the top edge of each cylinder is chamfered, and the crankshaft is in place. Remove the cap from the end of the number one connecting rod, referring to the marks made during removal, and wipe the original bearing inserts' surfaces with a clean cloth. The upper and lower bearing inserts are placed in the connecting rod and cap, respectively, ensuring proper tab alignment without lubrication. Position the piston ring gaps and lubricate the piston and rings with engine oil. Using a ring compressor, insert the piston/connecting rod assembly into the number one cylinder bore, gently tapping the piston into place while guiding the connecting rod onto the crankshaft journal. The connecting rod bearing oil clearance is checked using Plastigage before permanently bolting the rod cap. After tightening the nuts to specified torque, the Plastigage is examined for oil clearance, and if correct, traces are meticulously scraped off. A layer of clean moly-base grease or engine assembly lube is applied to the bearing faces, and the connecting rod is slid back into place on the journal. The entire procedure is repeated for the remaining pistons/connecting rods. Finally, rotate the crankshaft to check for binding, and the connecting rod endplay is verified, comparing the measurement to specifications to ensure correctness; if necessary, the rods are resized at an automotive machine shop.
