Q:
How to replace the front brake pads on Ford Expedition? Posted by Customer
A:
To replace the front brake pads, begin by turning off the air suspension system if the vehicle is equipped with one. Then, loosen the front wheel lug nuts, raise the front of the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands, ensuring the parking brake is engaged. Remove the wheels and drain about two-thirds of the fluid from the master cylinder reservoir to accommodate the piston's clearance. Place a drain pan under the brake assembly, clean the caliper and its surroundings, and use a C-clamp to push the piston(s) back into the caliper bore. Be cautious of fluid overflow and siphon some off if necessary. Afterward, inspect the caliper mounting bolts, clean and replace if corroded or damaged, and tighten them. Install the brake pads on the opposite wheel, reinstall the wheels, lower the vehicle, and tighten the lug nuts. Refill the reservoir with brake fluid, pump the brakes to seat the pads, and check the fluid level. Before driving, test the brake operation with light applications. For 2005 and later Expedition/Navigator models, additional steps include cleaning the disc and pads with brake cleaner, removing caliper mounting bolts, hanging the caliper with a wire (avoiding hanging by the brake hose), removing the old pads, applying anti-squeal compound to the new pads' backing plates, and ensuring proper installation of anti-rattle clips and inner and outer brake pads. High-temperature grease should be applied to caliper slider pins, and the caliper should be secured with bolts. Rear brake pad replacement is similar, with variations noted for the specific model.
