To inspect and replace the viscous clutch, begin by disconnecting the negative battery cable and checking the fan for excessive bearing play by rocking it fore and aft by hand. With the engine cold, turn the fan by hand to ensure it turns freely and visually inspect for substantial fluid leakage from the clutch assembly; replace it if issues are found. Reconnect the battery cable and warm up the engine, then turn off the ignition switch and disconnect the negative battery cable. Turn the fan by hand; some drag should be evident, and if the fan turns easily, replace the viscous clutch. For removal, on four-cylinder engines, disconnect the negative battery cable and, for 2010 and earlier models, disconnect the reservoir hose from the radiator filler neck, remove the screws securing the shroud to the radiator, and remove the four screws and washers attaching the fan/clutch assembly to the water pump drivebelt hub (or remove the drivebelt on 2001 through 2010 2.3L engines and remove the fan nut). Lift the fan/clutch assembly out of the engine compartment. On 2.5L engines, remove the fan bolts, set the fan/clutch assembly forward into the shroud, remove the shroud mounting bolts, and remove both the fan/clutch and shroud from the vehicle together. For 2011 models, remove the air filter housing duct, then remove the drivebelt and fan/clutch assembly. On V6 engines, disconnect the negative cable from the battery, and for 2010 and earlier models, disconnect the reservoir hose, remove shroud screws, and remove the clutch hub assembly nut (left-hand thread on 2.9L and 3.0L engines). Lift out the fan/clutch assembly. On 2011 models, remove the air filter housing duct, then remove the drivebelt and fan/clutch assembly. To install, inspect fan blades, replace if necessary, and reinstall the fan and clutch assembly, tightening the fan and clutch nut evenly to the specified torque.

Warm up the engine, turn off the ignition switch, and disconnect the negative battery cable again.
