Q:
How to check and replace Cooling Fan and fan clutch on Ford Bronco? Posted by Customer
A:
To check the fan clutch on vehicles so equipped, start with a cold engine, manually rotating the fan to ensure smooth movement with viscous drag; replace the fan clutch if it lacks resistance or fails to turn. Then, create a cardboard cover with a hole for the fan clutch, start the engine, and listen for the initial "roaring" sound as the engaged fan spins; the noise should decrease within five minutes. If not, replace the fan clutch. Next, place the cardboard in front of the radiator, start the engine, and hold it above 2,500 rpm, monitoring fan engagement and engine temperature. If the clutch doesn't engage before reaching the maximum safe temperature, replace it. Finally, remove the cardboard, start the engine, and hold it above 2,500 rpm to observe fan slowdown; replace the fan clutch if it remains engaged after five minutes. For the removal and installation of bolt-on fan clutches, remove the radiator shroud, unscrew the clutch from the water pump, and pull off the assembly, separating the clutch from the fan if necessary. Reinstallation is the reverse process. For threaded fan clutches, use specialized tools to remove the clutch by holding the pulley while turning the large nut; then, separate the clutch from the fan if needed and reinstall in reverse. Non-clutch fan removal involves removing the radiator shroud, taking out the fan retaining bolts, and removing the fan and spacer if present. Reinstallation follows the reverse procedure.
