- A:Purchase a new filter for your specific engine type. If the vehicle is equipped with Sequential Electronic Fuel Injection (later VS engines), the filter is impregnated with charcoal. Be sure the replacement filter is the same type. Remove the wing nut from the top of the housing and lift the top plate off (On carbureted and CFI models, remove the air cleaner wing nut). Remove the filter (and lift out the filter). Wipe the inside of the air cleaner housing with a clean cloth. Place the new air filter in the housing. If the filter is marked TOP, be sure the marked side faces up. Install the cover and wing nut. Don't overtighten the nut! For Four-cylinder EFI non-turbo: Disconnect the vacuum hose and outlet tube from the air cleaner cover. Remove the cover retaining screws and lift the cover off. Remove the filter. Wipe the inside of the air cleaner housing with a clean cloth. Place the new air filter in the housing. If the filter is marked TOP, be sure the marked side faces up. Reinstall the cover and retaining screws. Don't overtighten the screws! Reconnect the vacuum hose and outlet tube. For Four-cylinder EFI turbo: Detach the air cleaner tube adapter. Remove the cover wing nut and grommet. Lift the cover off. Remove the filter. Wipe the inside of the air cleaner housing with a clean cloth. Place the new air filter in the housing. If the filter is marked TOP, be sure the marked side faces up. Reinstall the cover and wing nut. Don't overtighten the wing nut! For V8 engines with Sequential Electronic Fuel Injection (SEFI): Loosen the air cleaner outlet tube clamp. Unfasten the cover clips and lift the cover off. Lift out the filter. Wipe the inside of the air cleaner housing with a clean cloth. Place the new air filter in the housing. If the filter is marked TOP, be sure the top side faces up. Reinstall the cover and secure the clips. Reconnect the outlet hose to the air cleaner.Posted by FordPartsGiant Specialist
