Q:
How do you remove the Wheel Bearing,Wheel Seal and rear axle on Ford Explorer Sport Trac? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the axleshaft, start by loosening the lug nuts on the rear wheels and then raise the rear of the vehicle, securely supporting it on jackstands. Proceed to remove the rear wheels and then the rear brake drums or calipers and discs. Clean the area around the carrier cover, remove the cover, and drain the differential lubricant. Remove the differential shaft lock-bolt and differential pinion shaft, taking note of the specifics for Traction-Lok differentials. Push the axleshafts toward the vehicle center and remove the C-locks from the button end of the axleshafts, being cautious not to lose or damage the rubber O-ring. Carefully extract the axleshafts from the housing without harming the oil seal. For oil seal and bearing replacement, use a rear axle bearing remover and slide hammer to withdraw the bearing and oil seal as a unit. Clean the rear axle housing bore thoroughly, lubricate the new bearing, and install it into the housing bore using an appropriate tool. Apply multi-purpose grease between the lips of the axleshaft seal and install a new axleshaft seal with the axle tube seal installation tool or a large socket matching the seal diameter. When reinstalling the axleshaft, ensure the rubber O-ring is in the groove in the axleshaft, push the O-ring toward the outer end of the groove, and insert the axleshaft into the housing. Install the C-lock on the button end of the axleshaft splines, pushing the shaft until the C-lock seats in the counterbore of the differential side gear. Position the differential pinion shaft through the case and pinion gears, aligning the hole in the shaft with the lock-bolt hole. Apply thread-locking compound to the lock-bolt, install the bolt, and tighten it. Clean the gasket mounting surface on the rear axle housing and cover, removing old residue with lacquer thinner or gasket remover. Apply a continuous bead of silicone sealant, run the bead to the inside of the bolt holes, and install the cover and bolts, tightening them in a criss-cross pattern. Finally, refill the axle with the correct lubricant, install the brake components, wheels, and lug nuts, lower the vehicle, and tighten the lug nuts.
