Q:
How to remove the Differential and rear axle assembly on Lincoln Navigator? Posted by Customer
A:
To begin rear axle assembly removal on all models, ensure that the vehicle's air suspension system is turned off if equipped. Proceed by loosening the rear wheel lug nuts, lifting the rear of the vehicle securely with jackstands under the frame, and blocking the front wheels for safety. Remove the rear wheels, disconnect the driveshaft from the rear axle differential pinion flange, and secure the driveshaft out of the way. Next, disconnect the parking brake cables, remove the brake assemblies and backing plates, and unplug the electrical connector from the rear ABS sensor. Disconnect the rear axle brake lines, axle vent tube, and rear brake hose from the junction block on top of the axle. For truck models, position a floor jack under the differential case, disconnect the lower ends of both shock absorbers, and remove the spring U-bolt nuts, U-bolts, and spring plate that attach the axle to each spring. On 4WD models, remove the rear spring spacers while lowering the axle. For Expedition and Navigator models, remove the brackets holding the stabilizer bar to the axle, lower the stabilizer bar, disconnect the air suspension system height sensor, and support the rear axle differential case with a floor jack. Disconnect the rear axle track bar, remove the rubber jounce bumper, disconnect suspension upper and lower arms, and disconnect the lower shock absorbers. Ensure there are no remaining attachments between the axle housing and the vehicle, then carefully lower the axle assembly to the floor. For 2003 and later Expedition/Navigator models, follow additional steps, including removing the rear driveshaft and driveaxles, spare tire, differential vent hose, and vehicle speed sensor connector. Support the differential with a floor jack, remove the differential's nuts and front torque arm bolt, and move it forward to clear the studs before carefully lowering it. Installation is the reverse of removal, and you should ensure all fasteners are tightened properly, reactivate the air suspension system if equipped, and bleed the brakes.
