When dealing with CV joint issues, it's essential to consider alternatives before diving into an overhaul, especially if torn boots are the primary concern. Exchange options for complete rebuilt driveaxles can save both time and effort, so it's wise to check the cost and part availability before disassembly. For the inner CV joint, first, remove the driveaxle from the vehicle, mount it securely in a vise with protective padding, and remove the boot clamps. Slide the boot back, remove the wire ring ball retainer, and take off the outer race from the inner bearing assembly. After cleaning the inner bearing, remove the snap-ring from the axleshaft, slide off the inner bearing assembly, and mark the inner race and cage for proper reassembly. Carefully pry the balls from the cage and rotate the inner race to release it from the cage. During inspection, check for wear, damage, or pitting on the cage and races. Shiny, polished areas are generally acceptable. When reassembling, ensure the match marks align, press the balls into the cage, and apply grease. Wrap tape around the axleshaft splines to protect the boot, slide the small boot clamp and boot onto the axleshaft, remove the tape, and install the inner race and cage assembly. Add a snap-ring, fill the outer race with CV joint grease, pack the inner race and cage assembly with grease, and reassemble the outer race with a wire ring retainer. Wipe excess grease from the CV Boot groove, secure the boot with clamps, and equalize boot pressure. Install the boot clamps and crimp them in place using a suitable tool. Finally, reinstall the driveaxle. Regarding the outer CV joint and CV Boot, remember that the outer CV joint is non-serviceable and permanently attached to the driveaxle. If any damage or excessive wear occurs, you'll need to replace the entire driveaxle assembly, excluding the inner CV joint. To replace the outer boot, remove the driveaxle from the vehicle, secure it in a vise, and cut the boot clamps from both inner and outer boots. Remove the inner CV joint and CV Boot as previously described. After washing the outer CV joint assembly in solvent and inspecting it for wear or damage, replace the entire driveaxle if any CV joint components show excessive wear. Install a new outer CV Boot and clamps onto the axleshaft. Repack the outer CV joint with grease, spread grease inside the new CV Boot, position the outer CV Boot on the CV joint, and secure it with new CV Boot clamps. Reassemble the inner CV joint and CV Boot as previously outlined, and then reinstall the driveaxle.
