How do you remove the blower motor in the engine bay and install it back on Ford Explorer? Posted by Customer

The blower motor is located in the right side of the engine compartment. First, disconnect the negative cable from the battery. For 1994 and earlier models, remove the air cleaner. Working in the engine compartment, push down on the electrical connector locking tab and disconnect the connector from the blower motor. On models without air conditioning, disconnect the small rubber cooling tube from the blower motor. On models with air conditioning, remove the single nut from the bottom of the plenum, which is located just to the right of the heater core access cover. Disconnect the electrical connector from the blower motor resistor, the vacuum hose from the check valve, and the vacuum line from the intake manifold, and remove it from the routing channel. Remove the three screws securing the blower motor to the heater blower assembly. Be careful not to damage the gasket, and pull the blower motor out of the heater assembly. If necessary, remove the push nut on the motor shaft and remove the blower wheel from the motor. Installation is the reverse of the removal process. Replace the gasket between the blower motor and heater assembly if its condition is in doubt. This gasket must be good to prevent moisture from entering the assembly. Make sure the electrical connector is fully seated and that it "clicks" into place. For 1995 and later models, remove the coolant recovery/windshield washer reservoir for access to the blower motor. On 2001 and later models, unbolt and set aside the cruise control servo from the fenderwell. Disconnect the electrical connector at the blower motor and the vent hose. Disconnect the cruise control servo and set it aside. Remove the four screws holding the blower motor.

If voltage is present but the blower doesn't operate, check the ground circuit. Test the blower speed switch for continuity in different positions. Locate the blower motor relay behind the right headlight and check resistance; replace if needed. For models with a rear air circulation unit, remove the console trim, disconnect electrical connectors, and pull the console and blower housing out to access the blower motor for the rear seats.

Back probe the blower motor connector with two large straight pins while leaving the connector plugged in, then connect a voltmeter across the two pins. With the transmission in Park and the parking brake applied, turn the ignition switch to the On position (engine not running). Have an assistant cycle the blower switch through each position while noting the voltage readings, looking for changes in voltage to confirm that the blower switch can vary the motor speed at different positions. If voltage is present at the connector but the motor doesn't operate, test the motor separately by disconnecting the connector and connecting one terminal to a good ground and the other to the battery positive terminal through a fused jumper. The motor should run at its highest speed; if not, check connectors and wires. If the motor still doesn't run, it may be faulty. To check the blower motor resistor assembly, locate it on the heater case to the right of the blower motor, and visually inspect it for damage. Check the resistor block for continuity between all terminals and replace the thermal limiter circuit if it's been opened due to excessive heat.For a blower switch check, turn the ignition switch Off, disconnect the blower resistor electrical connector, and use an ohmmeter to check for continuity to ground at each wire terminal with the blower switch in its corresponding position, making sure the ignition switch is Off before probing the Hi-speed circuit. Remove the control panel to check the switch for continuity, and if all switch positions show no continuity, verify continuity in the ground circuit.For blower motor replacement, disconnect the negative battery cable and, on 2001 and later models, move the cruise control servo aside by disconnecting its electrical connector and removing the mounting screw. Disconnect the blower motor connector and remove the vent tube if present. Then, remove the blower motor mounting screws, the blower motor wheel hub push nut, and the clamp from the shaft, and pull the blower motor wheel from the shaft. Installation is the reverse of these steps.
