Q:
How do you inspect and repack front wheel bearings on Ford Expedition? Posted by Customer
A:
To inspect and repack front wheel bearings, begin with the vehicle securely supported on jackstands. Spin each wheel to check for noise, rolling resistance, and freeplay. If there's noticeable movement, the bearings should be inspected. Remove the wheel, brake caliper, and dust cap. Straighten and remove the cotter pin, discard it, and use a new one for reassembly. Remove the nut lock, nut, and washer. Slightly pull and push the hub/disc assembly to remove the outer bearing, then remove the assembly. Pry the seal out of the disc, and remove the inner wheel bearing. Clean all parts and inspect for wear or damage. Use high-temperature front wheel bearing grease to pack the bearings, ensuring it's worked in thoroughly. Apply grease to the spindle and inside the hub. Place the inner bearing, seal, and outer bearing into position. Install the washer and spindle nut, tighten it slightly, and then spin the hub while tightening to about 30 ft-lbs. Loosen the nut 1/4-turn, hand-tighten until snug, install the nut lock and a new cotter pin. Check for proper adjustment and secure the cotter pin. Install the dust cap, then the brake caliper, wheel, and lug nuts. Finally, lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts.

Q:
How to replace rear bearing on Ford Expedition? Posted by Customer
A:
Remove the axleshaft and the oil seal. A bearing puller which grips the bearing from behind will be required for this job. These tools, adapted to screw onto slide hammers, are available from tool stores and many auto parts stores. Attach a slide hammer to the puller and extract the bearing from the axle housing. Clean out the bearing recess and drive in the new bearing with a bearing installer or a piece of pipe positioned against the outer bearing race. Make sure the bearing is tapped in to the full depth of the recess and the numbers on the bearing are visible from the outer end of the axle housing. Install a new oil seal, then install the axleshaft.
