  • Q: How to replace Heater Core on Ford Taurus?
    A: This is a difficult procedure for the home mechanic, involving numerous hard-to-find fasteners, clips and electrical connectors. Have the air conditioning system recovered by a dealer service department or an automotive air conditioning shop before proceeding. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Drain the cooling system. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core inlet and outlet pipes at the firewall. Remove the instrument panel.For 2007 and earlier models, remove the dash panel sealing from the heater core tubes. Remove the heater core tube bracket fasteners and remove the brackets. Disconnect the discharge air temperature sensor electrical connector and move it aside. Remove the passenger's side temperature blend actuator mounting screws and remove the actuator. Remove the heater core cover screws and remove the cover.For 2008 and later models, remove the instrument panel insulator fasteners and move the insulator aside. Remove the floor duct fasteners and remove the floor duct. If equipped, remove the Remote Function Actuator module fasteners, and move the module aside. If equipped, disconnect the temperature sensor aspirator from the heater core and evaporator core housing. Detach the pin retainer holding the console duct Y-adapter and remove the Y-adapter. Remove the heater core and evaporator core housing mounting bolts. Remove the floor duct adapter fasteners and remove the adapter from the heater core and evaporator core housing. Disconnect the electrical connectors and pin type wire harness retainers from the heater core and evaporator core housing. Detach all electrical connectors and wire harnesses from the heater core and evaporator core housing. Remove the heater core and evaporator housing from the vehicle.To prevent damage to the vehicle interior, use rags and old towels to cover the interior during removal of the heater core and evaporator core housing. Remove the dash panel seal from the heater core tube support. Remove the heater core tube support bracket fasteners and remove the bracket. Remove the plenum chamber mounting fasteners. Remove the heater core.Installation is the reverse of removal. Refill and bleed the cooling system. Have the system evacuated, recharged and leak-tested by the shop that discharged it.
